Check dates

The Perseids are an annual meteor shower visible every summer, usually reaching peak activity around mid-August. To enjoy them, it helps to find a dark place with a wide view of the sky and away from direct lights. Cumbres de Lores is a self-catering holiday house for up to 10 guests in Lores, La Pernía, in the Palencia Mountains of Northern Spain.

The Perseids

Every summer,
the sky lights up again

The Perseids appear when the Earth passes through a stream of small particles left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. As they enter the atmosphere at high speed, they create the bright trails we know as shooting stars.

Peak activity usually arrives around mid-August, although the Perseids can be seen for several weeks around those dates. Conditions change every year depending on the Moon, the weather and the time of observation.

You do not need a telescope or specialist equipment. A dark sky, a comfortable place and enough time to look up matter far more than any instrument.

The experience

How to enjoy the Perseids
without overcomplicating it

Dark sky

Step away from direct lights

Find a safe place with as few direct lights as possible. The darker the sky, the easier it is to see the fainter meteors.

With the naked eye

No telescope needed

Shooting stars can cross any part of the sky. A wide field of view is much more useful than looking through a telescope or binoculars.

Take your time

Let your eyes adjust

Once you reach a dark place, avoid bright lights and phone screens. After a while, your eyes adjust and begin to pick out much fainter objects.

Planning the experience

When to watch
The Perseids usually reach peak activity around mid-August. Each year, check the predicted date and time of the peak and the phase of the Moon using official astronomical sources.
Weather
A clear sky is essential. Staying for several nights gives you more opportunities if clouds or storms affect one evening.
The Moon
Moonlight changes from year to year. The less the Moon lights up the sky during your observing hours, the easier it is to see the fainter meteors.

Preparing to watch

Where to watch
Look for a dark, safe place with a wide view of the sky. You do not need to reach a very high altitude to enjoy the Perseids.
What to bring
Even in August, a long night outdoors can feel cool. Warm clothing, a blanket or reclining chair and a little patience are usually enough.
How to look
You do not need to keep looking directly at the constellation Perseus. Meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, so it is better to watch a wide area comfortably.

Piedrasluengas Viewpoint is one of the elevated, open places in the area that can be interesting for watching the night sky. Before heading there at night, check the weather and access conditions and always choose a safe place to park and observe.

Summer in the Palencia Mountains

Beyond the stars,
summer carries on

The Perseids can be a good reason to visit in August, but the rest of the day belongs to the mountains. From Lores you can combine walking routes, villages and Romanesque heritage with some of the most characteristic landscapes of La Pernía.

On summer days, Ruesga Reservoir is another place to slow down: water, meadows and woodland for a few hours outdoors and a swim before heading back to Lores.

San Salvador de Cantamuda, Piedrasluengas and the walking routes of Montaña Palentina Natural Park make it easy to fill the days without long journeys.

And when night falls, the pace changes again. On our Surroundings page you will find more walking routes and places to explore during your stay.

Frequently asked questions

What guests
often ask

When can you see the Perseids?

The Perseids can be seen every summer and usually reach peak activity around mid-August. The exact date and time vary slightly each year, so it is worth checking the latest astronomical information for that season.

Do you need a telescope to see the Perseids?

No. The Perseids are best watched with the naked eye because meteors can appear anywhere in the sky. Telescopes and binoculars make your field of view too narrow.

Where should you look?

The radiant of the Perseids lies in the area of the constellation Perseus, but you do not need to look directly at it. Shooting stars can cross any part of the sky, so it is more comfortable to watch a wide area.

How many shooting stars can you see?

There is no number that can be guaranteed. What you see depends on that year's activity, the phase of the Moon, how dark the location is, the weather and the specific observing conditions.

Where can you watch the Perseids in the Palencia Mountains?

Look for a dark, safe place with a wide view of the sky. La Pernía has a number of rural locations and viewpoints that may work well when the weather is favourable. Piedrasluengas is one of the elevated, open places in the area.

What if it is cloudy?

The Perseids remain active for several nights around their peak. Staying for several days increases the chances of finding a clear night, but weather is a natural variable that Cumbres de Lores cannot guarantee.

How many guests can stay at Cumbres de Lores?

The house sleeps up to 10 guests in 5 bedrooms. It is always rented as a whole house: rooms are not booked individually and no spaces are shared with other guests. The price is for the whole house, regardless of the number of guests.
